34 Dover Street, W.
Nov[ember]. 7, 1913
Dear Mrs. Wallace,
With the most profound regret I have just read of the death of Dr. Wallace and I want to offer you my deepest sympathy in your [2] bereavement, an unfortunate loss to the world, for its most notable scientist and noble citizen has gone, the last and greatest of a group of scientist minds and great intellects.
I shall cherish all my life the memory of that most delightful afternoon and evening three years ago when I had the pleasure and privilege of going to see you both and the courtesy, kindness and hospitality your so graciously extended to me on that occasion.[3]
I am now just returned from a two years hard journey in a part of South America Dr. Wallace knew so well and I was looking forward to seeing him again, for sure he was an inspiration and a guide to an extent and value beyond what any words are capable of expressing.
Very sincerely y[ou]rs | Hamilton Rice [signature]
