comes a long way from the main, & no one can tell where it is stopped. The frost that night was almost as severe as two years ago, — some say more so!

With my usual luck, thinking that after two such winters this one must be mild I had put in some very choice tender shrubs which I am afraid will be killed.

John sent me the other day a curious puzzle in an American paper, the first one who solves it to have £1000=$5000. And any who solve it $500 — and for each word solved $20 — to $50. It looks so very easy as if anyone [2] could solve it. I think I found the answers to all the words but one & sent them to John, but it will be too late for the competition. I have put it by somewhere & cannot find it or I would send it to you.

Qu—- Vic——-

Explanatory Note

More thought of by the English nobility than by us pushing Americans.

The above is one of the puzzles that I remember. It looks of course like Queen Victoria — but the right answer must be Quiet Vicinity; and there are six or eight like it, but some more difficult.
