Friday morning

My dear Dr. Sclater1

I have not left my room since I was at the Meeting last Tuesday2 week or should have seen you before this. I hope I shall be well enough to come next Tuesday. Do you know any one who has skins of Paradiseas?3 I should like to borrow Epim[achus]. magnus,4 Astrap[ia]. nigra,5 P[aradisea]. sexsetacea6 & P[aradisea]. superba7 to complete [2] the set I think of exhibiting.

I should like much to see the Banjirmassing8 [sic?] bird & will call as soon as I can get out.

I shall hope to show you my novelties next week.

Sclater, Philip Lutley (1829-1913). British lawyer, zoologist and ornithologist, secretary to the Zoological Society of London.
Possibly this refers to the regular meetings of either the British Ornithologists' Union or the Zoological Society of London, of which Sclater and ARW were both members.
Now Paradisaeidae, the family of birds that includes birds of paradise.
The Long-tailed bird of paradise or Superb plume-bird.
The Arfak astrapia, a species of bird of paradise.
The western or Arfak parotia (Parotia sefilata), a species of bird of paradise.
The greater lophorina or greater superb bird of paradise (Lophorina superba).
Banjarmasin, an Indonesian city on the southern end of the island of Borneo.
