My dear Will

Your Medal & Certificate came yesterday. I send it you today in order that you can take it to Hurst to show them. I acknowledged the receipt of it as asked by the Secretary. The medal is handsome as the reverse side, — I wish they had had a head of Galvani¹, Franklin², Faraday³, or some other Electrical discoverer, instead of that very commonplace phig⁴ of the P[rince].of W[ales]. But that is the "City" toadyism. [2] The weather is dreadfully dull — not a day’s sunshine the last fortnight. Consequently no news. Miss Macdonald has come to spend 'Xmas with us. We are glad to hear they are letting you learn something and do something at the works, & hope you will soon have some considerable job to look after. Let us know when you return to Charlton. [3] I wrote to King & Co. and they only say the new Senfi Album is not out yet, — but do not say when — so it may be a month or two longer.

There seems no prospect of Violet⁵getting any engagement after 'Xmas, at present, but she has plenty to do at present.

I send Certificate (in roll) at same time & also enclose a letter from your Portsmouth friend.
