My dear Wallace

I was aware of the existence of a species of Coregonus in Derwentwater, but this is without any doubt not the vendace of Loch Maben, but Coregonus clupeoides. The name vendace is popularly used for species of the genus promiscuously, & only in scientific works it is restricted to the Loch [2] Maben species.

If you can get this specimen from the Keswick Museum for inspection, I will with pleasure examine it, to set the matter at rest, if you entertain any doubts about it.

Yours very truly | A. Günther [signature]
