Dear Sir
I have yours of 2d with proof.2
As M[onsieur] Quatrefages3 has written one of the ablest ethnological or anthropological works in the french [sic] language, "L'unité de l'espèce humaine",4 one of your recent additions will hardly mend matters — but perhaps you will allow your name to be appended to the article? It is simply a controversy & your article is kind & courteous, therefore there need be no hesitation on your part — & it will keep me allright [sic] — I reviewed5 [2] the above book "L'Unite" myself & differed from him, & he will think I am very hard upon him.
I am very sorry I cannot get you separate copies — Churchills6 positively refused to allow reprints when they published the J[ourna]l.[?] for their a/c. & I had to refuse some of my best friends Mr Fairbairn,7 &c, and now dare not begin for fear of giving offence to these gentlemen.
Yours truly | James Samuelson [signature]
