13th June 1911.

My dear Mr. Wallace,

You must share any credit or blame that may attached to the introduction to the new Edition, with me. For a letter written to me in 1888, after you had read my presidential address to the Geological Society, suggested and urged upon me the duty of trying to remove the misconceptions in the minds of many of my fellow stonebreakers [2] concerning the real nature of the Lyellian teachings.

I am glad you like the portrait. Other old friends of Sir Charles1 — Mrs. K. Lyell,2 Sir Joseph Hooker3 and Mr Huxley4 — all tell me that this brings back the "real man" in his working days better than any of the other portraits. But it is only the autograph below which really dates from 1830 when he had just seen the last pages of the first volume of the Principles [3] through the press. The portrait only goes back to 1846 (when however he was only 51 and was in the midst of his labours) It is the oldest portrait of Lyell and I doubt if there can be many older earlier photographs in existence. and Considering the present state of the original one — very faded and very yellow with age — I think the reproduction as good as could be possible expected.

I am please to read your words about the "great twin brothers" in natural science — But it is strange to find that [4] which the name of Darwin5 in honoured in his own University of Cambridge as it should be — Oxford seems always to have remained quite oblivious to the fact that they she can claim an equal honour with the sister University.

Hoping you are keeping well, as your vigorous handwriting seems to suggest[.]

Yours very faithfully | John W. Judd6 [signature]

P S I am glad that the review of your book in Nature is an appreciative one. I fancy our friend the Editor is very chary about mentioning the names of writers of unsigned articles.
