UPTON SINCLAIR
EDGE MOOR, DELAWARE
July 20th2
My Dear Mr Wallace:
I thank you for your kind letter. I understand your point of view. Perhaps you do not understand mine — thru the accident that I have written only about a third of what I intend to write. I regard that birth — not as one of the "penalties of sex" — but as one of the penalties of sex ignorance. Before I get thru I shall discuss [2] a normal birth & how it can be had. Meantime, I am willing to horrify people to any extent that need be by the portrayal of what actually happens, to our parlor bred, corset-clad, indolent & self indulgent, untaught & undisciplined women.
The book is to be expurgated for England.
Sincerely | Upton Sinclair [signature]
