My dear Sir

I have just returned from Norway & find your letter of the 22nd ulto.

I do not consider any land or fresh water mollusca peculiar to the British Isles.

As to the species mentioned in Mr Tate (according to your letter, for I have not seen his book) I would remark as follows.

"Cyclas" (Sphaerium) pisidirides is in my opinion a variety of S. corneum. Vide "British Conchology", I p. 6 IV[?],150

Geomalacus maculosus probably Lusitanian, as Limax anguiformis of Morelet B.C. I. 130; France, as G. Andrewsii of Mabille, V 153. [2]

"<Helicella>" (Zonites) excavatus [Helix excavatus]. Lapland, Finland, Germany, & Switzerland. B.C. I. 169.

Limnaea <insolata>. Perhaps a monstrous & <bent> variety of L. glutinosa or of that polymorphous species L. peregra, of which latter species I have described 14 varieties B.C I 105,106,108. The fact of its present isolation makes me suspicious that this so-called species is not distinct, because all our other species of fresh water mollusca have a very extensive and almost world-wide range.

Believe me | Yours very truly | J. Gwyn Jeffreys1 [signature]
