Sie hatten die Freundlichkeit mir Ihre werthvolle Schrift über Variation und geographisc<he> Verbreitung der Schmetterlinge des östlichen Asiens zu schiche [MS torn] nobfür[?] ich Ihnen verbind lichsten Dank sage. Ich würde dies schon früher ge[MS torn] haben, wäre ich nicht durch ein hartnäckiges An genleiden sehr in meinen Thätigkeit geheint, so das[MS torn] ich erst jetzt mit dem Studium Ihrer höchst interessanten Arbeit fertig geworden bin. Dein Namen u. Hauptinhalt nach war mir dieselbe natürlich schon [2] lange bekannt, allein mir aus slein kurzen Bericht, welchen Gerstäcker darüber gegeben hat. Dass den Polymorphismus bei mehreren tropischen Schmetterlingen in so eilatan ter Weise vorkommt, ist eine sehr merkwürdige That sache, die sich vom Strand punct der alten Schöpfungs theorie durchaus nicht bi greifen lässt. Es erstaunt mich nicht, dass bei uns in Europa eigentlichen.

Polymorphismus bei Schinetten lingen us bisher nicht bi obachtet wurde, da die geographischen Verhältnisse dafür viel wenigen günstig sind, als im malayischen Archipel. Ganz besonders wichtig scheint mir Ihre Beobactung, dass häufig 2 Formen von Weibchen [3] an ein und derselben Localität sich vorfinden: die Staiu[?] form und eine der abgeles[?] teten Formen, denn dies spricht neben andern That sachen entschieden gegen das von Moritz Wagner kurz lich aufgestellte Migrations gesetz der Organismen.

Nach diesem soll sich eine Species nur dann in eine neue umwandeln können, wenn sie durch Wanderung einigen Individuen sich isolirt und eine Colonie bildet, welche von den übrigen Individuen der Species vollständig getrennt sind ist. Ich bin diesen An sicht in einen kleinen Schrift Über die Benech tigung der "Darwin' schen Theorie" entgegen getreten, [4] [MS torn]ndem ich zu zeigen versuchte, dass sehr wohl an ein und dein selben Ort die Spaltung einer Art in zwei neue vor sich gehen kann. Gern würde ich ein Exemplar diesen Abhandlung Ihnen zuschicken leiden aber habe ich augen blicklich kein einziges Exemplar mehr. Sobald ich wie der erhalte, werde ich mir die Freiheit nehmen, Ihnen eines zu senden. Einstweilen schicke ich Ihⁿen meine Untersuchung über die Entwicklung der Corethra, die vielleicht einiges Interesse für Sie haben könnte.

Your work and the main contents were of course the same that I had [2] known for a long time, only to myself from a short report what Gerstäcker gave about it. The fact that polymorphism occurs in such a rapid manner in several tropical butterflies is a very strange fact that cannot be grasped by those like Strand in terms of the old creation theory. I am not surprised that we actually have it in Europe.

Polymorphism in [1 word illeg.] has so far not been observed, since the geographic conditions are far less favorable than in the Malaysian archipelago.

It seems to me that your observation, which is that often there are 2 forms of females, is particularly important if they are to be found in one and the same location: the [1 word illeg.] form and the [1 word illeg.] form, because this speaks, among other facts, decisively against Moritz Wagner's law of migration of organisms, which was recently established by Moritz Wagner.

According to this, a species should only then be able to transform itself into a new one if it isolates itself from some individuals by migration and forms a colony which are is completely separated from the other individuals of the species.
