Dear Sir

I have ordered my publisher in Zurich to send you a copy of my 4th vol. intilted [entitled]: ≪Explication d'une seconde édition de la Carte géologique de la Terre≫ ["On a Second Edition of the Geological Map of the World"], care of Messrs. Macmillan & Co; and I hope it will reach you safely, in a few days.

In order that you may not lost [lose] time in looking [it] over; allow me to call your attention on the following pages:

33 (Cambrian [the former word replaces a deleted and illeg. word] or Taconic terra firma & water in the time of the Primordial fauna).

p. 47 & 48. (Dromatherium sylvestre & Ichnology).

p. 81, [deleted and illeg. word] 82 (old continents round Europe).

page 163 (old continents in South America).

page 181, 182, 183, 184 & 185 (please read those 5 pages carefully; my explanation [on] p. 185 about the origin of the Gallapagos [sic] fauna [2] differ[s] from your[s] in the Geog[raphical] Distribution1)[.]

p. 187 you will find your name quoted.

p. 192 (faune triasique européenne [Triassic European fauna], vivant [living] in New Zealand).

p.205, 206 & 207.

At the end of the volume there is a reduced Geol[ogical] map of the world. The larger one in 8 sheets, I cannot send; but you may see it at the library of the Geological Society Burlington House, or at Stanford.

Allow me a few remarks on your vol. II, "Geographical Distribution of Animals"

page 51. Tropical North America; it seems that Tropical Central America is more appropriate.

page 79. Besides Jamaica we have detailed accounts [3] of the Geology of two thirds of Hayti2 (see On the topography & Geology of Santo Domingo, by W. M. Gabb 4th in Trans. Amer[ican] Philos[ophical] Soc[iety]. vol. XV, 1833, Philadelphia. Contains also some zoological [the former word is written over a faintly written "geological"] researches I think).

page 114. East of the Rocky Mountains; it ought to be West[.]

p. 115 ≪a full half of it is a mantle of ice.≫ no! only one third[.]

p. 114 & 115. last line of 114 & first line of 115 "there east of the Misisippi [sic] <river>" instead of Misisippi- [sic], I will suggest Rocky Mountains, which is true.

p. 128 "tortoises it is deficient owing to the absence of lakes etc. etc."; but they [there] are many lakes such as: Tulare, Buena vista & Kern3 [4] or Bakersfield, Mono, Owens, Walker, Bigler, Canyon, Pyramid, Winemuca [sic], Honey lakes etc. etc.

p. 128. Oreortyx picta extend to Arizona, in the valley of the Colorado & Bill Williams fork.

p. 176. Suggest[?] 1. 2. 3. 4 under Palearctic, & put these numbers under Oriental, also put no 1, at the Ethiopian.

p. 193. ≪in Nebraska≫ add ≪now Dakota≫

p. 194 idem idem4

p. 195. Ictitherium in Veverridae [sic] & [on] p. 197 it is put again among the Hyaenidae

p. 198. Pliocene of Oningghen [Oeninghen]; now it is Miocene.

I like your work more & more; it is splendid.

very truly yours | Jules Marcou [signature]
