Edinburgh

July 28th 1872

Dear Sir,

I have sent you a copy of a paper which I trust may be of some interest to you.2

The Aim of the paper is to show that the great problem of nature lies beyond the region of Natural History.

Could you kindly favour me with the addresses of Herbert Spencer3 and [2] Mr. Mivart.4 I have a good many copies for distribution.

I am | Yours most truly | James Croll [signture]

Alfred R. Wallace Esq. FR[?].

Page 1 is numbered page 250 in the upper right-hand corner of the page by the repository.
See WCP4978.5415. ARW's reply, 4 Aug 1872. Croll's letter had been redirected and the paper did not accompany it. The subject was probably on Croll's particular interest, climate change related to geological periods.
Spencer, Herbert (1820-1903). British philosopher, sociologist, and prominent classical liberal political theorist.
Mivart, St. George Jackson (1827-1900). British physician, zoologist and Roman Catholic polemicist.
Page [[3], which is otherwise blank, is annotated "J Croll" in pencil in an unknown hand, near the top margin.
