My dear Sir

On looking through my paper on the azorean, coleoptera I find I cannot unfortunately tell you at all the opterons proportion — most of the species were in small numbers & unfortunately the presence or absence of wings is a character rarely used — & difficult to see without infusing the specimen — The new aculles, daparoceous, Tarphius & Xenomma are all apterons1 but I cannot say whether the Slaters[?] & my two new genera are or not & have not now the material — cert[?] of the 170 European species I do not think many of have become opterons since nearly all seem introduced — I have been working hard at my Cocciridlides[?] — & find the genera elude me at present. [2] but the species & broad groups come out pretty well. I have identified now more of yours — espec[ially] some 3 or 4 coeloptera — but the great proportion are new. It will not be till next year however that I can describe them as in the smaller things towards the end there are evidently many new genera to establish. I have had so little experience in purchasing exotic coleoptera that I was forced to take the opinion of others & regard 4 £ as about their value — if however you should differ from this estimate I hope you will not [illeg.] to let me know.

Yours very t[ruely] | John Notch [signature]

These are all types of beetles.
