Nash Mills,

Hemel Hempsted.

Sept[ember]. 25. 1874

My dear Sir,

Mr Pengelly has been writing to me about Mr Everetts1 proposition with regard to the explanation of the Borneo Caves. So much depends in such a case upon the personal character of the explorer that before taking any steps in the matter I am anxious to obtain your opinion as to the competence and integrity of Mr Everett, of whom personally I know nothing [2] I believe however that you have perfect confidence in him and also think that there is every probability of researches in the caverns leading to some interesting results. If this be so, it appears to me that the best way to forward the scheme will be for me to guarantee £75 or £100 for 3 or 4 months work, and then see what subscriptions I can obtain from those who are interested in such researches, as I should [3] not care to be more than one of the subscribers to a Bornean Exploration fund. Will you kindly let me know your opinion in the matter. If you think there is time to spare I might see what subscriptions I could get together, but nothing much could be done before November.

Excuse my troubling you & believe me | Yours very truly │ John Evans[signature]
