Magd. Coll.
12 June 1875.
My dear Wallace,
I don't think I should have drawn up the tables had you not asked for something of that sort — but I am very glad I did, & as as the knowledge I acquired in doing so has been & will be most useful to me. When you have quite done with them you may as well let me have them again, since they are the fair copy. I kept & am now using the foul one. [2]
I quite understand that Salvin’s1 tables would bother you now but a little — but it is a pity you had not something of the sort at the beginning of your work.
If you care to enter into a minor division of the "European: Subregion — i.e. N. of the "Mediterranean" you may like to know that I think I see an Eastern & a Western Province, parted by a line which runs from [3] about Trieste to the [illeg.], thence to the angular mountain frontier of Hungary Bohemia as far as the valley of the Neisse & so to the Baltic a little west of Stettin. Hence you may continue it to the top of the Gulf of Bothnia (passing between Oeland & Gottland) & so to the Arctic Ocean somewhere about the Lyngen Fjord. I think such a line will about mark the breeding-range of several rather birds rather [4] characteristic of the E. & W. Europe respectively — but it wants a little working at before I can be sure about it.
Yours very truly | Alfred Newton2 [signature]
