Nov[ember]. 8. 1876.

Dear Sir.

In reading through your work on the 'Geographical Distribution of Animals'3 I have noticed, & corrected in the margin of my copy, a considerable no. of misprints, omissions &c, which are of course inevitable in a work of that description, & thinking it might be of use to you to have a list of these for correction in future editions, I have ventured to copy out my marginal notes, which I [2]4 now forward to you. Different readers will of course find different faults in the various parts, according to each one's particular knowledge, & by the means[?] if each sent you a list similar to the one I now forward, most, if not all, the faults of the present edition might be avoided in a future one. I have also noticed that in several cases the same a generic name is used which is also used in other classes of animals. Thinking that perhaps it may be helpful to give this list, I herewith subjoin it.

Venilia (Picidae & Geometridae.[)]

Heliophob[i]us (Spalacidae — Noctuidae[)]

Podabrus (Dasyuridae — Telephoridae (Coleoptera)[)]

Mesites (Cinclidae — Cossonidae (Coleop[tera])[)]

Butalis (Muscicapidae & Tineidae)

[3] Galerita (Alaudidae — Carabidae)

Conurus (Psittacidae — Staphylinidae

Tanygnathus (" ")

I must leave to others better acquainte[d] with the synonomy of the various groups concerned to decide to which of the two a gen[eric]. name should be confined, but I thought it as well to [1 word crossed out] notice the matter to you. Hoping you will excuse me who is a perfect stranger (though long an ardent admirer of your works) thus addressing you

Believe me, dear Sir | Yours truly | W. A. Forbes.5 [signature]
