Lippstadt3,

Sept[ember]. 28, [18]78.

Dear Sir,

With the greatest interest I have lately read your admirable work on Tropical Nature4 and I would like to give an abstract of it in one of our Journals, but unfortunately I do not understand the meaning of some of the English names of of plants, birds, butterflies and moths made use of in your work. I would, therefore, be very much obliged to you if you would be/ good enough and write me the systematical names belonging to the following English ones: blue-bell ([Cam]panula?), milk-wort (Polygala?), [Butter]cups (Ranunculus?), chatterers (Bombycilla Cotingidaegarrula?), gold-crest-warbler (Regulus cristatus?), gaper (MuscicapaEurylaemus?), barbets (Bucco?), (Camperwell-beauty [sic] Vanessa antiopa, blues (Lycaenae?), coppers (Polyommatus?), Emperor-Moth (Saturnia- carpini pavonia [1 word illeg] ), Purple-Emperor, Apatura iris Magpie Abraxas grossulariata Mullein-moth, Cucullia verbasci Orange -tip-butterfly, (Anthocharis cardamines5?) [2] Yellow-underwing-moth (Triphaena pronuba?)

With the most sincere respect | Yours | very faithfully | Dr. Hermann Müller6 [signature]| Oberlehrer7, 8.
