My dear Sir,

I am having a few diagrams made to illustrate a lecture on Mr. Darwins theory and am anxious to exhibit some striking cases of 'simple variability.' In your classical memoir on Malayan butterflies you mention P. Severus but you [2] do not figure the varieties.

I write to ask you if you would oblige me so far as to refer me to any set of figures of one species or form of Butterfly clearly illustrating 'simple variability.'

It is a matter of indifference where the Butterfly comes from.

I daresay you could also quite readily tell me of some striking instances (with reference to [3]1 figures showing the facts) in some other Insects or in Birds. You would confer a real favour by giving me this aid. I have selected two examples amongst Fishes and several Plants but have some difficulty in getting figures from among animals.

Believe me, dear Sir, | Yours very truly | E Ray Lankester [signature]

Bottom right, British Museum stamp.
