Alfred R. Wallace, L.E.D,
My Dear Sir,
Through McMillan & Co, Publishers, there came to me recently your valuable work on Darwinism, for which please accept my grateful acknowledgements.
Thirty years ago, when I was a student in this College, one of the Professors loaned me a copy of the first American edition of the "Origin of Species", and I carried it to a remote village where it was my fortune to teach a district school for the winter. There I read it with care and was deeply interested. In it I first met your name as a co-worker and discoverer in the most fascinating field of research. It is a pleasure to me now to put your volume beside Darwin’s among the most valued in any collection.
Faithfully yours | O. Clute [signature]
