My Dear Dr. Wallace:-

I received your delightful book some weeks ago and have read considerable in it, but I have had to be away considerable and have not made the progress with it that I hoped to do. I am much pleased with it and think it timely, now that so many are attacking Darwinism. You have managed to sprinkle in a fair amount of new illustrations and thus contrived [2] to make the book readable even to those who are familiar with all the Darwinian literature. I want to thank you for your very complimentary allusions to my paleo-botanical work. You have certainly used the facts well and your combination of the diagrams is ingenious and economical.

Mrs. Ward desires to be remembered kindly to you. Though more interested in your travels, she read all your writings.
