My Dear Dr. Wallace:-

I received your delightful book¹ some weeks ago and have read considerable in it, but I have had to be away considerable and have not made the progress with it that I hoped to do. I am much pleased with it and think it timely, now that so many are attacking Darwinism. You have managed to sprinkle in a fair amount of new illustrations and thus contrived [2] to make the book readable even to those who are familiar with all the Darwinian literature. I want to thank you for your very complimentary allusions to my paleo-botanical work. You have certainly used the facts well and your combination of the diagrams is ingenious and economical.

Mrs. Ward² desires to be remembered kindly to you. Though more interested in your travels, she read all your writings.
