Dear Sir

I must bot delay acknowledgement of your letter the other day received, the receipt of which gave me great pleasure. It was as you surmise, the little complimentary allusion to me in your paper on "Spiritualism" which made me think of sending you my volume; though, I confess, without thinking it likely you would very much [1 word crossed out] come to look into it. I am pleased to find that you have read it with some degree of interest; & specially pleased that you should they have taken the trouble to [2] favour me with your remarks on particular possible of criticism, at which you think me in error. It may very well be that you are right & that — particularly as to the "permanent possibilities &c." — I may to some extent have [1 word illeg.] Mr Shile — an indeed in matters so obtuse it is nearly inevitable to put one's foot in it at some points or another. You certainly suggest one or two nice points which I should suppose carefully reconsider; & whether I decide then in one way or the other I what must all the same remains indebted to you for the kindness & courtesy, with which you have called my attention to them.
