WORLD'S CONGRESS HEADQUARTERS

Committee on a Psychical Science Congress:
Prof.[essor] Elliott Coues, Chairman
1726 N. Street, N. W., Washington, D. C.
Richard Hodgson, LL, D., Vice-Chairman,
5 Boylston Place, Boston, Mass.1
July 8th 1893
My Dear Professor Wallace:
I hope I am not too late in enclosing the formal invitation you will find herewith. Of course it has been understood all along that anything with which you might favor us would be gladly and respectfully welcome. I have been travelling of late, and in much distress on account of illness in the family; and these circumstances have thrown all my Congress correspondence in arrears. Any such Congress would be obviously defective without word from "A.R.W.", and I am sure that out of the goodness of your heart you will not disappoint us! It need not be a long nor an elaborate paper — in fact something short, sharp, and decisive, categorically stating some facts you know, and your mature conclusion concerning the interpretation of those facts, would be specially desirable. While we all know the tenor of your experiences and views, yet we specially desiderate an authoritative restatement of them, direct from you to the Congress. This will be no less acceptable to those who differ from than to those who agree with you. Pray let me hear from you at earliest convenience, as I shall be uneasy till I have your kindly affirmative reply.
I have forgotten whether or not I ever sent you a copy of our "prospectus", with names of our Advisory Council, & c., and so enclose one, together with the official "invitation" abovementioned.
Trusting all is well with you and yours, I remain, with warm personal regards, | Sincerely yours, | Elliott Coues [signature]
