Dear Sir,

Knowing what a busy life yours is & feeling that you have but little time to spare to answer letters of unknown correspondents, I have some hesitation in addressing you.

I have however lately been reading one of your books — very "On Miracles and Modern Spiritualism" dates 1875; and the points it raises are of such vast importance that I am emboldened to ask you a few questions.

I have never had the opportunity of [2] investigating the subject of spiritualism, & indeed until I read your book I was inclined to scoff at it. Now however I see there must be something in it, & this leads me to my first question [1 word illeg.]

1. Do you still consider (after over 20 years) that the presence of spirits (ethereal beings) who may under certain circumstances communicate with us, is conclusively proved.

If so then all the main difficulties of Christianity are removed

2. Can you introduce me to some genuine medium — for I know that a little practical teaching is worth any amount of theory.

[3] I am a surgeon & have not much time that I can call me own, but if I could get help on the subject by such means it would be of great help use to me.

Last year my wife & only child dies to my great grief — if however I could only be certain that they are still living, & not only living but actually near me, and that under proper conditions could make their presence known to me, the whole course of my life would be altered for the better.

If you can give me any help on this matter I should be ever grateful to you.

Yours truly | John Terry [signature]2
