Dear Sir,
Having undertaken the irksome task of reading the Essays sent in for competition on the subject of Depression & Trade my Colleague and myself were greatly pleased with the one bearing a Motto from Goldsmith'. We, however, did not see our way to recommend it for the prize, especially in account of disagreement as to the remedies suggested.1 But the Essay having great merit, we thought it proper to open the Envelope bearing that motto in order to correspond with the author. It occurs to us that if you consented we might recommend [2] to Messrs Pears to publish the first part of your Essay upon [illeg.] and Causes together with the two other Essays. Would you oblige by kindly communicating to me your mind upon the subject. Otherwise the Essay is at your disposal.
Believe me | Dear Sir, | Yours faithfully | Leone Levi2 [signature]
