My dear Dr Wallace,
I inclose [sic] you a letter received through Mr Pagan from Mr Mitchell of the Acclimatisation Society showing that at last some plants of Nymphaea gigantea have been forwarded to you. I hope they will arrive safely and in good condition. Mr Mitchell is I believe acting for the Secretary who is away and as he seems to be the head outdoor man I have little doubt that he knows exactly [2] how to pack the plants for transit. I was rather amused to find he had dubbed you "Reverend", — one more title to your many distinctions. Possibly he may have mixed up LLD and DD and thinks you are the latter.
Since receiving Mr Mitchell's letter, I got a consignment of Nymphaea gigantea from the <Clarence>, but as some had already been forwarded I did not trouble to send you any of them, which however were in very fine condition — I kept a few for myself and [3] friends and handed over the balance to Mr Maiden, the Director of the Sydney Gardens, who has had a good deal of trouble in growing them.
I am glad some of the Blandfordia bulbs have survived and I hope you will have some success with them.
The season for <ground> orchids is just coming on and I shall go hunting for them and hope to be able to send you some later on.
Yours very faithfully
H Deane [signature]
