THE ATHENAEUM

PALL MALL. S. W.

12th January 1904

Dear Dr Wallace

At a meeting of the Committee of the London Library, held yesterday afternoon, it was unanimously resolved to ask you to allow yourself to be nominated Vice President of the Library in norm of Herbert Spencer2. There are four vice-presidents, but the office is entirely honorary & does not necessitate your attendance at any meetings, or the undertaking of any whatever, though of course [2] if you found it ever practicable to attend, your presence would be heartily welcomed. We all felt that that among our Vice-President we ought to have a distinguished representative of science, from time to time, and I only help the wishes of the Committee when I say that I sincerely hope you will consent to their nomination.

I trust that your health is good and that you are [3] feeling no bad effects from the passing winter.

Believe me | yours very truly | [signature]
