At a meeting of the Committee of the London Library, held yesterday afternoon, it was unanimously resolved to ask you to allow yourself to be nominated Vice President of the Library in [illeg.] of Herbert Spencer.² There are four vice-presidents, but the office is entirely honorary, & does not necessitate your attendance at any meetings, or the undertaking of duty whatever, though of course [2] if you found it ever practicable to attend, your presence would be heartily welcomed. We all felt that that among our Vice-Presidents we ought to have a distinguished representative of science, from time to time, and I only express the wishes of the Committee when I say that I sincerely hope you will consent to their nomination.

I trust that your health is good and that you are [3] feeling no bad effects from the passing winter.
