Sir. /
For some time in connection with my work in Natural History I have been endeavouring to find a theory wh: wd. throw light on certain groups of facts wh: I think, have never been satisfactorily accounted for.
Protective coloration in animals & the migration of Birds seem to point to [2] definite mental action, although such action may be unconscious.
It seems to me that Myers’2 suggestions in "Human Personality"3 — may be of great help here.
This subject, however, is so abstruse that a man, without the highest qualifications, may well hesitate before dealing with it publicly.
I have been endeavouring to bring Myers’ theory tentatively to bear upon certain of the facts wh: are [3] constantly confronting us. & I venture to ask yr advice on the enclosed paper.
I may say that any opinion you may be good enough to express will be used for my own guidance alone & certainly not as an advertisement -
I send cover for its return & I can only say that if I am unduly trespassing upon yr. time, wh: may very well be, you will not regard yourself as lacking in courtesy to a stranger if you send it back unread =
I am, Sir | yrs respectfully | H Knight Horsfield4 [signature]
