Dear Sir,
In answer to your letter2 dated Oct 9. there is a well known work by De Condolle3 which gives an estimate of the number of Phanerogams in certain countries & although not exactly what you ask for will interest you[.]
De Condolle Geographie Botanique 1855.4
The number of Phanerogams [2] in Scandinavia, Finland & Denmark = 1677
Lapland = 496
Sweden & Swedish Lapland = 1165
There are several books which would give you further information some of which you might possibly be able to get on loan from the Library at the Linnean Society.
Summa Vegetabilium Scandinaviae5 by E. Fries6 contrasts the Flora of Finland, Lapland, Sweden, Norway, Gothland & Denmark (as known in 1846) It gives a tabular statement with a [3] list of plants shewing which grow in each of these countries.
The best Flora of Scandinavia7 is Hartmans.8 It has been issued in many editions. We have the edition of 1879 but the plants are not numbered. Hartmans estimate of species seems very fair & reasonable and he does not segregate unduly[.]
If you wish I will count for you the number in this Flora. But recent Scandinavian lists are swollen by large numbers of [illeg.] &c.

I have just been staying with your friends the Clement Reids16 at Moreton Hampstead on Dartmoor. We found a very rare St John's Wort. H. linariifolium.
