My Dear Atkinson
I [2 words illeg.] with Jan[?]! May Jan[?] long sit at the head of the table & talk philosophy. May Jan[?] never grow raffed1 nor squint[?] — mentally! I have had a lady friend with me for a week & that has turned my thoughts from ph Science & at her suggestion my books have been laid aside "for winter evenings". I have tried to return th them this morn: & feel so quick that I have gone from[?] asleep & am so now — as Jan say[s] — what's in a name? [2] A rose by any other name whats[?] stinck[sic] as much[?] — at least it w[oul]d be all the same to me as I have not & never had any smell. My nose is notably a quarter of an inch shorter than it sh[oul]d[?] have been, had I ever used it. Why won't "Science of Mind" do? We mind being the aggregate of all sensation or sentiences. I have not read Senes article but mean to do — but I fear I shall not have anything worth to to send to Jan while Jan[?] are away. It is long since I have had an idea & "what's this [illeg.] as long as Jan's 'appy"
Say, for Thom[?] cans't[?] what is it to be wise? "Tis but to know how little can be known to see all their faults & feel our own" [3] "Truths w[oul]d Jan teach or save a sinking land. All fear, none aid you, & few understand." So let's go to Bologne[?] [illeg.] — eat, drink, & be merry, for tomorrow we die. but we won't be d_d will We?
d_[?] me j[?] we do.
I am open[?] I am not in a proper frame of mind so no more at present.
form[?] am[?] our Sincerely | Charles May [signature]
3my dear has of course science [illeg.] is right[?] enough but what to call hotel for [2 words illeg.]

Sincerely| Henry Atkinson
