Dear Alfred Russell[sic] Wallace,

Dear Sir

I am endeavouring to bring forward what I venture to term a new science — that of the economic adaptation of mankind collectively to its environment, a subject I know matters[?] you greatly. I am lecturing before the economic section of the British Association1 at Birmingham in September on the subject, under the heading of "Human geography and Industry-planning";2 and I have finished my book,3 with the same title; the work of some years.

Could I venture to ask if you would consider writing an introduction to this? I submit that exercise of the true "science of living" is the next phase of social evolution, which must now emerge. I enclose a synopsis and would send you the MS if you entertained the suggestion.

I have sworn not to rest until I can establish this science.4

Yours truly

C. Reginald Enock [signature]
