WASEDA UNIVERSITY

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

October 10th '13

Dear Dr Wallace:-

Excuse me to introduce myself. I am a Professor of sociology at Waseda University, Tokio. Lately I have read your new book, "Social Environment and Moral Progress,"2 which is so interesting and inspiring that I wish to translate it for those Japanese3 who can not read English. Will you kindly allow me to undertake it? If so, not only I but also Japan herself will be very much thankful to you. In case you will give me your consent for my request, please tell me what I shall do toward the publisher. When my translation will be done, it will be published by our University Press.

[2] If you want to know more about me, please write to Dr J. Estlin Carpenter,4 Manchester College, Oxford, asking what I am. I have studied under his tutorship in Oxford for three years. Or Professor H. E. Egerton5 of Oxford University will tell you something about my knowledge of English. I have translated one of his works, which translation was published by our University Press about three years ago.

Apologising for troubling you and hoping for your favorable answer,

I am, Dr Wallace, | yours most respectfully, | R Nagai6 [signature]
