Dear Sir

I cannot agree in your belief that vaccination "is of little or no benefit"[.] I know that, as in many other beliefs offerings, there is some danger without due precaution and as an investigation is now [2] going on it seems to me that Mr. Taylor's3 motion4 is to say the least very illtimed [sic] [.]

Y[ou]rs faithfully | George Cubitt [signature] 5

Manuscript text in the top right hand corner of the letter reads "294".
The date 1883 is taken from the British Library catalogue entry for this letter and is consistent with the reference to P.A. Taylor's motion (see endnote 4).
Although the manuscript is unclear, the author appears to be referring to Taylor, Peter Alfred (1819 — 1891). Member of Parliament for Leicester.
P.A. Taylor attempted to move a motion in the House of Commons on 19 June 1883 against compulsory vaccination, but the motion was defeated. See Speeches of Mr P.A. Taylor and Mr C. H Hopwood on Vacinnation in the House of Commons, 19 June 1883 (London, 1883). Pamphlet in London Library, revised from reporters' notes.
The manuscript is stamped "British Museum" in red just underneath the signature.
The words "Geo Cubitt" in a hand other than the author are faintly readable towards the top centre of the third page.
