JUNIOR UNITED SERVICE CLUB,

LONDON. S.W.

14th July 1898

Sir,

I read with much pleasure your last work2 and noted your reference to India.

Like others I respect Sir W. Wedderburn3 who states an absolute truth as to the condition of the people. But he is mildly wrong and seem, never to have studied geographical & climatic environment when as the advocate of the Babus, he assumes [2] that Eastern and Western ideas can be assimilated. It is this [illeg.] western civilization that is robbing India.

Liberty is all very fine under our environment and religious, political & commercial freedom will understand. But in a country where the environment is [illeg.]; it may be a means of oppression. Witness the disruption of the Hindu Family. May I take the liberty of asking [3] yr valued opinion on another matter. I am anxious to study the Family organization in the lower races and to note whether am[on]g the mammals isolation is more marked in Europe than in India.

My address is Hotel Victoria Chexbres Canton Vaud Switzerland

Topinard4 has written something in the Family organization but I cannot obtain it.
