My dear Friend

I was indeed pleased to receive a letter from you and would have replied but have had some illness myself and my wife is just up from a bad spell of malaria. It has been a cool wet summer and though we are high and dry here and miles from any overflow or swamp I will[?] get the malaria sometimes floats out to us. My wife's [1 word illeg] reached at one time 105º right up to [1 word illeg] point but with God's blessing my prayers and the remedy I used she is well again. Am sorry to hear of poor George Silk1[;] if you see him give him my love. You did not mention your brother John who went to California [1 word illeg] Mr Sims2 and wife. Have they all passed over ahead of us? The last time I saw Mr Sims he was in business but I dont think doing very well for he [2][p. 2] could not pay me some borrowed money over [1 word illeg] some years. Well may God bless them if alive. You spoke of my venturesome life, yes it has been and I enclose to you one story nearly all fact. I am only a crude writer not up to date so after offering it and some others to one or two magazines, I quit. There is so much trash, filth, and immoral writing published in our American magazines and I am sorry to say very little fit to be read in the family circle. I suppose the enclosed[,] crude as it is would not be acceptable in England[.] We all liked Jim Hasset[?] and he premising nearly every sentence with "Heck I've" My wife nicknamed him which he seeming to take good naturedly. My old Rheumatism is troubling me up again so I can hardly write[.] So with a prayer that God's blessings may rest on you
