Dear Dr Wallace,

May I ask you to accept (without acknowledgment) my new volume of stories? The first one is dismally tragical, and I hope that you will not read it; but I shall also hope that some of the others may interest you.

Your new book "The Revolt of Democracy" has interested me greatly, and makes me wish that Chapter IC, on co-ordinated labour, could be printed as a tract, and distributed everywhere; [2] it would be most useful.

Dublin, as you are no doubt aware, has been full of labour troubles for some time past. Perhaps the ultimate result will be good, but meanwhile they cause acute distress, and there is such animosity between the different religions [sic] sects and political parties, that the prospect of any satisfactory settlement seems a distant one.

My beloved Father passed away in July, and I am so lonely without him that were it not for the hope of reunion beyond this world, I should quite despair.
