My dear Dr Wallace,

You remember I feel sure my youngest daughter Freddie, now the wife of Mr. Rushton Fairclough³ late lecturer in Greek at the Toronto University, a ripe[?] and most exact scholar in Greek and Latin and an accomplished literary man, who had, after graduating at Toronto University with high [2] class honors, won scholarship and fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University. Where too he had the pleasure of hearing you lecture. Now as he has accepted the position of Associate Professor at the Leland Stanford University. And as you are acquainted with and have learned to esteem highly Mrs. Stanford⁴ the remaining ^benefactor who has bestowed her wealth in the interest of the worlds progress & wellbeing I have ventured to ask you for Mrs. Allen's sake & [3] my daughter's and my own to enlist Mrs. Stanford's sympathies in Mr. Fairclough's favor so that he may not feel an entire stranger in this his new position. Though when once known, I feel that he will need no one to say ought in his favor, for he is one to win his way into many hearts and to keep always those whom he has won. Of course you can only say that you know us and Grant⁵ & recommend him on our account.

With respect to you & [4] Darwin where you differ, I must say that though I wish to see him proved right & though so much, especially embryologically leads up towards his view & almost includes it. Yet the gaps, never yet bridged over, is so wide & its sides so abrupt, that, the older I grow, the more difficulty do I find in ideally spanning it over even with the narrowest wire, & so keep my mind open for all argumentation. At one time it was all closed, almost sealed up. With kindest regards from Mrs. Allen & my daughter.
