Dear Mr. Macmillan1

I am exceedingly anxious to obtain some regular literary employment that will bring me in a fixed income however moderate, having had a series of losses & misfortunes that render it very hard for me to get on. As you are in the midst of the literary world and so well acquainted with it, I venture to hope you will be so good as to inform me early, should anything to your knowledge which you think I could undertake.

I have often though that I might [2] perhaps be of use to you in the Editorship of "Nature" supposing you should require any one as a responsible deputy to Mr. Lockyer2 whose increasing scientific engagements may perhaps render it impossible for him always to give his personal supervision. In a month or so, when I have finished the book I am now doing for Mr. Stanford,3 I shall be at liberty, and should be glad of any work, preferably such as I could do partly at home or which would not take up my whole time.

Trusting you may be able to help me | I remain | yours faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

A. Macmillan Esq.
