Messrs. Macmillan & Co
Dear Sirs
Many thanks for sending me a copy of Mr. Spurge's "Bitter Cry of the Children," and thereby calling my attention to the book. I am reading it with the greatest possible interest. It is a masterly work — the best on the subject (I believe) that has ever been written.1 It exposes — calmly & scientifically — the fundamental rottenness of our civilization. It is just now most opportune, [2] and I sincerely trust that some philanthropist will see that every member of both houses of Parliament has a copy of it. He could do no better work for humanity.2
You can make what use you please of this letter.
Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]3
