Dear Mr. Wallace,

In my forthcoming series of books on organic evolution I am going to have steel-plate portraits of Darwin and Weismann1. It is needless to say I should like also to have yours. In the event of your giving me permission, I think [2] it would be desirable not merely to copy the portrait from your "Darwinism," But if you have an other gov[ernmen]t[?] photo[graph]. and would send it to me, I would place it in the artist's hand forthwith.

Yours very truly2, | Geo. J. Romanes [signature]

Weismann, August (1834-1914). German evolutionary biologist.
Above and to the right of the signature is a stamp bearing an image of a crown and the words BRITISH MUSEUM.
