Dear Sirs

Having now had the proofs of the whole of Spruce's3 Jouney up the Rio Negro and Orinoco4 — I send back the outline (skeleton) map of that part, together with the Old map of the Useful Knowledge Society with all Spruce's chief places scored in Red. Also my map of Uaupés, also scored.

The old Society map is so good that the Uaupes part could be added to it, it would be far better than a new one.

I also return the General map which is so full of mistakes that it seems as if the names had been put in from some unreadable MSS. You will see the series of names that I have noted, all quite unintelligible, — while the mountains shown across the Uaupés are absolutely non-existent.

[2] I should like the general (large) map back (or another proof) to correct the Andes District, when I get the proofs.

I also return the Tarapoto map which only needs one small correction.

I also send some of the rough proofs of book with a number of passages scored blue — where geographical details bearings of Mtns &c. are given.

Also a copy of Spruce's "Itinerary" — day by day — in the Cassiquiarie district & Orinoco which will enable [3] the map maker to put the new places approximately in relative positions.

I send also the large map to illustrate the last chapter — showing how it can be reduced to height of page.

We are now just beginning proofs of the 2nd. volume.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
