My Dear Dr Wallace
Mr Maiden has furnished us with a list showing numbers of Phanerogams for each Australian State. I know that the Queensland <record> is below yours.
Maiden shows the Northern Territory (& South Australia) separate but Northern Australia includes both tropical and temperate. I do not think there is any dream of separating them.
I am sorry to have been so long in forwarding this, but I am sending it to you as soon as I received it.
Mr Maiden says he has deducted from the Flora of New South Wales the number of species from Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. [2]
Mr Maiden's list is as follows:
State | Up to 1889 | up to August 1910 |
Tasmania | 1029 | 1084 |
Victoria | 1894 | 2087 |
S Australia | 1892 | 2038 |
N S Wales | 3131 | 3522 |
Queensland | 3753 | 4280 |
W Australia | 3560 | 4195 |
N. Australia | 1956 | 2056 |
In all Australia | 8839 | 10427 |
With kind regards | Yours very faithfully | H Deane [signature]
