Dear Sir
Although I am doubtful whether I shall be able to read your book, not having gone into your subject, I have no doubt I shall find something of interest in it & therefore send you my book in exchange.
At all events I shall have a careful & systemic sympathetic reader, instead of the hasty and ignorant glance which is all that the general run of newspaper & magazine critics [2] can afford to give.
When you have read it through I shall be glad of a few lines giving me your real opinion of the book as a connected scientific argument, & also informing me of any errors or defects you may note in it.
Believe me | yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. The reviewers will persist, so far in treating it as a work of imagination!
