My Lord,

With reference to Y[our] L[ord]'s despatch no 40 of the 9th Instant2, desiring me to request the Spanish govt to be so good as to cause such instructions to be issued to the competent authorities as will facilitate the views which Mr Wallace has of visiting, in his projected scientific expedition to the Eastern Archipelago, certain Possessions of H. C. M. in the Eastern Seas, I have the honor to transmit to Y[our] L[ordship] copy & translation of a communication which General Lersundi3 has addressed to me in answer to my application.

Y[our] L[ordship] will perceive that N. E.4 informs me that under the date of the 15th Instant the necessary orders were given to the Colonial5[2] office directing proper instructions to be issued to the authorities in the Philippines to afford to Mr Wallace any assistance & protection he may require.
