Letter (WCP3692.3597)

[1]1

Waldron Edge, Duppas Hill, Croydon

June 22nd 1879

Dear Sir2

I see in last "Nature" you refer to a paper by yourself in Proc[eedings]. of Liverpool Geol[ogical]. Soc[iety]. on "Geological Time"3. As I am greatly interested in this question4 I should be much obliged to you if you could spare me a copy of your paper.

I remain | Yours faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

T. Mellard Read [sic]5 Esq.

"TMRI.W.2.1", while handwritten, is printed instead of in ARW’s usual cursive script, indicating that this was likely a later annotation.
This particular letter is, as we shall see, addressed to Thomas Mellard Reade, CE, FGS (1832 — 1909). A geologist, architect, and civil engineer, Reade worked in Liverpool, presided over the Liverpool Geological Society for three separate sessions and published many works, making extensive study of the geology of Lancashire.
Reade’s 1876-6 Presidential Address for the Liverpool Geological Society was entitled "Geological Time", and was reprinted and augmented in the 1879 text Chemical Denudation in relation to Geological Time.
ARW himself wrote an article entitled "The Measurement of Geological Time", printed in Nature in February and March of 1870.
While ARW spells the surname "Read", we see that the correct spelling should include the final "e", as "Reade"
