WCP3695

Letter (WCP3695.3602)

[1]

I1 beg to Report on the accompanying paper2 as follows:

1. It is undoubtedly original

2. Having been publickly[sic] read I presume it must be considered as accepted already, & it would be rather offensive not to publish it.

3. It is certainly very tedious & full of personal detail of little interest to the public; yet it is difficult to shorten it without rewriting it completely in an abridged form. I have however marked one personal passage at p. 782 for omission.

4. As it has been read this question needs no answer.

Note: I have corrected many of the native [2] names the spelling of which was erroneous or inconsistent— Some I have made conjectural alterations of. Perhaps by consulting the MSS. it will be seen what is really meant.

To make the paper at all generally interesting or even intelligible it sh[oul]d be illustrated by a map showing the routes of the several expeditions, & the names of the towns, villages[,] districts &c. so often referred to in the paper.

Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

This note is written on blue paper, similar to that of the typed forms indicative of ARW’s correspondence with the Royal Geographic Society (RGS) in reviewing papers for potential publication
This letter from ARW is in response to a November 27, 1879 letter from Clements R. Markham— secretary of the RGS—to ARW. The "accompanying paper" referred to would, in this case, be The Dutch Expedition to Central Sumatra By Professor P. J. Veth,. Pieter Johannes Veth (1814 — 1895) was a Dutch professor of geography and ethnology, WCP3680.3584
