My dear Mitten1

Thank you for your notes of our Welsh excursions, which will be needful. You do not tell me however, whether, any where in England or Scotland, you ever gathered a greater variety of mosses in one spot and in about one hour, than you did at Pont-y-glyn.2 I well remember you calling out "I've got another species" so many times that I thought the place was inexhaustible!

Last Thursday we had a call from Canon Usherwood who had just [2] returned from the Victoria Falls Zambese[sic] where he staid four days & brought home from there some seeds, which I sowed at once & the little shrub from the "Rain forest" came up yesterday — only 3 days! It had 2 hours soaking only. It is possible these things may be nearly hardy as the country is 4000 ft. above sea though only 18 [degrees] S[outh]. Lat[itude].

Tell Annie we are still in a mess, but hope to be cleaned up, below, by and of this week.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

P.S. It will be about 3 weeks here before they have quite finished.

From this point on, the text is written in another hand and on a separate piece of paper, which is torn down the right side; it is likely a draft or collection of notes, rather than a final letter.
