The Dell, Grays, Essex.

Dec.[ember] 10th. 1874

Dear Sir1,

You do not seem to remember that my letters in "Nature"2 referred specially to the fact of a competent person being now not in Borneo & willing to devote himself to cave exploration if his expenses are paid. Mr. Everett3, was a pupil of Prof. Huxley4 at the School of Mines5, & before going to Borneo spent some time at Torquay with Mr. Pengelly6 specially to qualify himself for cave exploration.

Mr. John Evans7, Marsh Mills, Hemel Hampstead, wrote me on the same subject a few [2] months back, offering himself to advance £100 to enable Mr. Everett to begin work. I think therefore you had better communicate at once with Mr. Evans & Mr. Pengelly & I have no doubt when a beginning is made other geologists will be willing to subscribe.

I remain | Yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

H.C. Sorby Esq.
