My dear Hooker1
Many thanks for your kind letter.2 I quite see the special difficulties you refer to in Mitten's3 case,4 and have no doubt you are right in thinking this would be no use in making an application for him. I took the opportunity of being in London on Thursday to take all Friday at Kew, but found that that it was your day at home. I will take an opportunity of mentioning what you say about purchasing [2] Mitten's collections of Mosses and Hepaticae for Kew. I suppose you would want to have a statement of the approximate number of species and of type specimens, and I presume I may add that you will do what you can to obtain for him exceptionally liberal terms.
Believe me | yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
