Dear Newton
Many thanks for your criticism on my answer to Haughton1 — I have followed your advice, & I think have much improved my article2, by treating the Revd Gentleman with the greatest tenderness3 [2] & giving him the benefit of every doubt as to his own meaning.
I have been thinking it would be well to print the Index to Bonaparte4 which Tristram5 has made. It would not cost much, & I sh[oul]d think everybody who has the book would give a shilling for the index.
I have begun making an Index for myself but find it horrid [3] work. It would occupy in print about ½ sheet gov.[?] & if about 250 copies were printed I should think the Publisher6 of Bonaparte7 would take half to sell with his copies.
Will you join in the speculation?
I remain | yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
