Dear Sir
I return you the letters you were so good as to lend me with many thanks. If when you have done with them they are not wanted by Mr. Bates2 family I would much like to have them, as there are many passages in there I may want to quote if I should write an autobiography. In whose possession are they? If they will not be given up then, in a month or so I would like to [2] have them again to copy some parts.
Believe me | yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. It seems strange that I have not kept any of Bates’ letters, but I have no memory of them, & have moved so much about that I fear they may have gone with waste paper. I am now busy with Exns3 but in two or three weeks I will have a look again.
